Power BI – January 2025

Version Updates

Intro

Reporting

1.  Explore data (from a visual)

Since November 2023 it’s possible to ad-hoc explore data from your Data Source or Semantic Model through the Explore option within Power BI. With the January 2025 release you can now use explore straight from the visuals in a dashboard. A new window is launched, and users will be able to see the underlying data and even easily tweak the visual (add new data, filter the data, change the chart type, …).

2. Storytelling in PowerPoint

  • Reset

Normally, when using storytelling in PowerPoint, the presentation stays stable and unaltered. So, if you wanted to have the latest version of a report you would need to remove and re-embed it. With the new ‘Reset’, you can now either have the report reset to its original view when it was added to PowerPoint OR have it sync with the current view in Power BI (and as such update it to the latest version).

  • Page Up/Down

Up and down arrow keys can now be used to navigate between slides while using the Power BI Add-In.

3. One Drive and SharePoint file picker

The File Picker has been updated to more closely resemble the normal Office experience. This update includes:

  • Opening and saving files in One Drive/Sharepoint have been improved.
  • Adding new folders in existing workspaces
  • Pinning folders and files

4. Text Slicer Update

The new Text Slicer was released in PREVIEW with the November 2024 release. Users can use the slicer to filter the data model.

A new option has been added to the slicer settings. With this setting ‘Accept multiple values’ ON/OFF, user could potentially provide multiple keywords to filter on. For example, they could enter ‘Store’ and ‘Fashion’ to filter on the selected text field to contain either ‘Store’ or ‘Fashion’.

5. Tree map Update

Two updates have been done to the existing Treemap visual.

  • 3 new tiling methods
    • Squarified
    • Binary
    • Alternating
  • New spacing methods
    • Space between all nodes
    • Space between groups

Modelling

1. Semantic Model Version History

The Semantic Model on the web will have an Office-like history available in public PREVIEW. This ‘version history’ will give the option to see the model i previous versions and make it possible to restore back to a previous version of your model.

2. TMDL View (Scripting)

It is now possible to make changes to your semantic model through editing of the TMDL in the new code editor.
